About Giovanni....

Giovanni started boxing at a late stage taking up the sport at the age of 19 but after just a month of training, his first trainer was shocked at the talent of this fighter and later told reporters that Giovanni had picked up more in a month than most newcomers do in a year.

With just nineteen amateur fights under his belt Giovanni decided it was time to test himself in the professional ranks and at the age of just twenty seven he is just about to hit his peak and put the division on red alert as he targets more world titles to go along with his already aquired WBA title and 2010 looks to be very promising for this talented fighter.

At the time of writing Giovanni holds an impressive record of 21 wins with just one loss and one draw, but here is the most impressive part, seventeen of them twenty one wins have come by knockout giving him a brilliant knockout percentage of 73%. He is a busy fighter who loves to throw power shots from a variety of unexpected angles and attack from the opening bell, for anyone who have yet to witness a Giovanni Segura fight, let me be the first to say that you are missing out on a great fighter who never fails to amaze and put on an exciting fight.

GENERAL QUESTIONS:

Can you tell us how you got started in boxing?

Since i was a little kid I always liked boxing I was living in Mexico however the place where I was living their wasn't any boxing gyms, so everything I knew about boxing was what I would see on TV. In 2001 I came to the US and started boxing and I learned it fast, I only did 12 amature fights then I became pro in 2003.

Who has been your biggest influence throughout your boxing career so far?

Julio Cesar Chavez

For some of the people who have yet to see you fight could you please describe your fighting style?

I like to fight in the inside I am a big puncher, I try to make my fights as exiting as possible.

What would you say is your best punch?

Right upper cut

What do you consider to be your strengths and weaknesses?

I am a warrior and I never give up that is my strength. My weakness would be my inexperience in boxing.

Throughout your Amateur / professional career you have achieved some great things but which of them would be your proudest achievement?

My proudest achievement would be the revenge with Cesar Canchila

Can you take us through a typical training day on a run up to a big fight?

I wake up at 4:30am to do a 1hr run and at 12:00pm I do my 3hr boxing workout.

Can you tell us where your gym is situated and describe it for us?

Its in Bell, CA. It is a complete boxing gym that has a weight room, boxing ring and all the equipment need for a good workout it also has treadmills in case of a rainy day, the people at the gym are great which makes my hard workouts fun.

What tips could you give to some of our readers getting started in boxing?

Boxing is a fun sport but also the hardest  so if your train hard all the time it will make your fight easier

POUND 4 POUND:

There is always some debate about who is Pound 4 Pound the best fighter in the sport. Who in your opinion deserves that number one spot?

Manny Pacquiao

MANNY PACQUIAO V MIGUEL COTTO SUPER FIGHT:

Manny Pacquiao goes head to head with the dangerous Miguel Cotto on November 14th. How do you see that fight unfolding?

It is the hardest fight Manny has ever faced in his whole career becuase he hasnt faced someone with the potential that Cotto has, I think Pacquiao could win the fight but I almost have it 50/50.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER:

Your nickname in the ring is "El Guerrero Azteca" which of course means The Aztec Soldier, How did you get that nickname?

The state where I was born from in Mexico it is called Guerrero, wich stands for worrior, and in the gym where I trained its called "Azteca Boxing Club" when I did my dayview in 2003 the writters from a newspaper " La Opinion" in that time Ramiro Gonsalez gave me the nickname of the "Aztec Warrior" because I was from Guerro and training at Azteca gym he combied those two and said that will be your nickname from now on.

There was a controversial decision In your last fight which saw Juanito Rubillar get stopped after a towel was throw into the ring, How did you see the fight going before the stoppage and if the fight had gone on how do you think it would have unfolded?

I got surprised as to why they stopped the fight I didnt like the way the fight ended I guess a few power shots that I laded scared the corner of Rubillar because after I landed the big punches his corner yelled out something that I didnt understand but it was just a matter of a time because he was getting hit alot and loosing power.

On the 21st November you are due to defend your WBA Light Flyweight title against Sonny Boy Jaro. What do you know about Sonny and what are your plans going into the fight?

Sonny Boy is a tough fighter and I am training for a tough fight I am not taking noting easy for this fight but Im sure there is a big win for me coming up on Nov 21st.

Throughout your career you have faced some of the worlds best fighters. Which of your wins have been your most satisfying and which would you say was your most difficult fight?

I think Cesar Canchila has been the most satisfying becuause I have never faught someone that moves and hits like Canchila. As far as my most difficult fight it has to be the Olympian Carlos Tamara.

Within your division there are fighters such as Brian Viloria, Edgar Sosa, Ivan Calderon and Ulises Solis, Could you please give us a brief description on each of these fighters?

I have worked in sparring with Brian Viloria for about 4 or 5 of my fights and if your give him distance his dangerous because of his speed. Edgar Sosa is a tough fighter but i think he is being protected to much, that is going to affect him when he fights someone tough. Ivan Calderon I think he is getting old and can be beat anytime soon. As far as Ulises Solis he is a good complete fighter but he has problems taking power punches he can not take a punch.

At this point in your professional career what would be your dream fight?

That would be me vs Calderon

FUTURE:

What are your plans for 2009/2010?

For the rest of 2009 I plan on winning my November 21st fight against Sonny boy Jaro and having a peaceful christmas with my family. As far as 2010 word has it their is a big chance of a fight with Ulises Solis but for now those are just words, their is nothing confirmed.

On leaving is there anything you would like to say to the readers of TopClassBoxing?

I just wanna say Hi to the beautiful people in the UK and hope that one day I would have a chance to go visit your beautiful country or why not have a fight over there, and if your into adrinaline and boxing knockouts or exiting fights your are invited to see my explosive and exiting fight on Nov 21st  and believe me when I say you will see this.
