PACQUIAO TO FIGHT DE LA HOYA ON DEC 6TH!!!

Thurs 28th August 2008

"We'll know who he is fighting tomorrow," Arum told ESPN.com. "I made a commitment that I wouldn't say anything and that tomorrow there would be an announcement. I'm not allowed to make any comments. Everything will be clear on Thursday."

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer would also not confirm the deal but reportedly sounded positive when asked about it.

"Last week the deal was 90 percent dead, but we were able to revive it. The fact that it has been so quiet is a good sign," Schaefer said.

Manny Pacquiao's coach Freddy Roach told reporter " it’s a great fight. A no-brainer anyway. There is no better fight out there.”

He added that he would have to “make some adjustments, get some good sparring partners but nothing out of the ordinary.”

There were indications from Pacquiao himself that they would have a longer training camp than the usual 7-8 weeks.

Roach noted that Pacquiao was “coming off a good win” against WBC lightweight champion David Diaz and his “confidence is at a high.”

Roach said Pacquiao has several pluses on his side - “speed, youth, power. We are stronger, faster. The only advantage the guy (Oscar) has is he’s going to be ten pounds heavier than us” when they enter the ring but we have all the other advantages.”

The two-time “Trainer of the Year” pointed out that De La Hoya “doesn’t fight shorter guys well.” He said all Pacquiao has to do is to get close and the reach advantage “goes away quickly.”

The biggest thing for Pacquiao, according to Roach, is “getting past his jab” and that he would perfect a counter by the end of training camp.

Roach conceded that in some small way he contributed to getting the fight done because he needled De La Hoya “just a little bit” by his public pronouncements in an interview this reporter and Dennis Principe conducted on the dzSR Sports Radio show “Sports Chat” some time ago. Roach told us then that De La Hoya was slow, couldn’t pull the trigger and that Pacquiao would knock him out.

Roach said, “Oscar is a nice guy, but Manny is my guy.”

jAMES DEGALE SO SKINT HE MAY LOOK TO GO PRO BEFORE 2012 OLYMPICS!!!

Thurs 28th August 2008

British Gold Medalist James Degale may have to dip his toe into the professional ranks after revealing when he pays his bills he is left with nothing. Promoters are flocking to sign the 22 year old to a professional contract after he took gold at the Beijing Olympics.

“It’s going to be hard to turn down £1m but, hopefully, Team GB will sort me out with a good sponsor, so I can buy a nice car and live comfortably. I want gold in 2012 but it’s about my life. By the time I pay off my credit cards and give my mum and dad a touch, it leaves me with nothing. My dad’s got his own business but he’s not rich. I want to pay them back, get them a car and pay off their mortgage. But to defend my medal in my home city in 2012 and win gold would be marvellous. Money can’t buy that feeling of standing on the podium and hearing the national anthem. Money can’t buy a gold medal.”

VITALI VS PETER PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES!!!

Thurs 28th August 2008

WBC Heavyweight Champion Sam Peter (30-1, 23 KOs) will defend his title on Saturday, October 11th against WBC Champion Emeritus Vitali Klitschko (35-2, 34 KOs), who will be making his return after a four-year absence.

The Peter-Klitschko showdown will be co-promoted by Duva Boxing, K2 Promotions and Don King Productions from the O2 Arena in Berlin, Germany.

SAMUEL PETER

“I am very grateful to be here today. I want to clear up one thing. I am the true heavyweight champion. Vitali, you never beat a champion. You say you are the champion, but you are not a champion. You can’t be the champion until you beat me, and you can’t. I have fought 31 fights and never ducked anyone. I fought with my eardrum broken and lost 25 pounds that night, but I still fought. I am making one promise today. I will knock Vitali out. Trust me. I will knock out Vitali, and then I will beat his brother (IBF/WBO Heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko). There is no doubt about that.”

VITALI KLITSCHKO

“Thank you to everyone who put energy into making this fight happen. I am pleased to say that I am back. I am happy to be back in the ring, happy to fight for my title. I gave away my title freely because of my knee injury. I feel sorry for Peter that I must fight him. Skeptical people say that I won’t win because I have been out of the ring for three years, but I did not lose the title. I am honored to fight for (WBC President) José Sulaimán, who gave me this chance. I have big respect for Mr. Lou Duva, but his fighters always say they will knock me out and it never happens. Mr. Duva is preparing Peter to knock me out, but this will never happen. I don’t underestimate Peter. He is a good puncher. I will give my best to be the winner, to take my title back, and to make history where two brothers will be champions at the same time. It’s a huge motivation for me. I promise the fight will not be easy and it won’t go to the scorecards. It will probably end between rounds four-six. I have a lot of presents ready for Peter for October 11.”

PRESCOTT CONFIDENT OF KNOCKING OUT KHAN!!!

Wed 27th August 2008

Breidis Prescott is confident he can cause a upset and be the first man to knockout Amir Khan on September 6. Prescott holds a perfect 19-0 professional record combined with the fact he has fought on the tough streets of Barranquilla all his life makes a very scary prospect for Khan.

"I don't think I can knock him out - I know I can," he told Craig Slater, in the first of three Sky Sports News exclusives. "If I catch him out with my uppercut or my left hook, he's going to go.

"I can't wait for this fight. I won't lose the opportunity because if I win this I can get a world title fight and all that it means. It would change my life. Here I can focus solely on my sport, There are no luxuries here but the effort we are putting in here and the sacrifices we make means we are all the more hungry to succeed.

"Many champions have passed through. Ricardo Torres, who is a great Colombian fighter, has passed through here and used this gym as well. This is a place where great fighters are made."

FORMER CHAMP STABBED TO DEATH!!!

Wed 27th August 2008

Edip Secovic, a former WAA boxing champion, died early Tuesday in a knife fight at his own pub. He was 50.

The body of the Serbia-born Austrian boxer was found around 6 a.m. on the sidewalk in front of the pub in a southern Vienna district, police said.

Secovic won the WAA super middleweight world title in 1988 and added a European title in the same category a year later. He was Austria's most successful boxer — winning 30 of his 40 professional fights before retiring in 2002.

Nicknamed the "Serbian Bull," Secovic was Serbia's junior champion before moving to Austria to start a professional career in 1980.

He won the 1983 Austrian middleweight title and became world champion five years later after beating Bryan Grant of the United States in a first-round knockout.

After retiring, Secovic worked as a boxing coach and opened The Champ's Pub in Vienna. The fight started inside this pub Tuesday and continued outside, police said. Secovic was stabbed four times in the chest and neck, with several witnesses reporting they saw two men fighting.

Police found a knife and later arrested a 26-year-old Russian national who had blood on his clothes. The man said he had been inside the pub but could not remember what happened, police said.

Secovic is survived by his wife, Mira, and their three children, Bernhard, Emir and Anita.

PAUL WILLIAMS BEING CONSIDERED FOR LAST DE LA HOYA BOUT!!!

Tues 26th August 2008

Golden Boy Vice President Eric Gomez yesterday told reporters that Paul "The Punisher" Williams is one of the possible opponents for Oscar De La Hoya's last bout if the matchup with Manny Pcquiao isnt resolved.

"Paul Williams name has come up and we’re definitely thinking of a match between him and Oscar, He’s definitely an alternative. If Sergio Mora wins [against Vernon Forrest on September 13] he’s another possibility."

Williams promoter Dan Goosen is understandably angling for a De La Hoya-Williams meeting.

"Oscar has said before that he wants to fight the best welterweight and that’s Paul Williams," said Goossen. "Williams beat Margarito so it makes sense. Oscar is the biggest name in boxing without a doubt. Williams is the most feared fighter."

CAZARES NEARS FIGHT WEIGHT!!!

Tues 26th August 2008

Former WBO junior flyweight champion Hugo Cazares (26-4-1, 19 KOs), is getting closer to the world title weight limit of 108 pounds. The former champion yesterday told reporters "I'm feeling very strong and came to Puerto Rico to win this fight, I'm right on schedule to make the weight limit and I'm going to win this fight by knockout!"

dEGALE "SHOW ME THE MONEY"

Mon 25th August 2008

Britain's Middleweight gold medalist James Degale yesterday told reporters how there is alot more to come from him and the Amateur boxing association needs to match his efforts with financial backing.

"In my fights I've shown bits of what I can do but there's probably 40 per cent left," Degale said. "I did it the hard way. When I saw the draw I thought it would be hard but I got better and better and I believed. In my first fights I didn't really get out of first gear, but I just wanted to get it over and done with because of the pressure. If it had been anything else, I could have relaxed a bit more. I didn't do this for money because I love my country, but if they want me to stay amateur I want more. I've been on £1500 per month since I qualified and a year and a half ago I was on £750 a month. The Amateur Boxing Association promise everything from kit to bonuses and it never happens. When I get back I should get a £20,000 bonus and if not I'm going to be right on their case about it."

Frankie Gavin was expected to be Britain's gold medallist from the games and his team-mate had a little dig at his team-mate who had to pull out after failing to make the lightweight division weight limit.

"I haven't heard from Frankie but I bet he's jealous," Degale added. "He's a silly boy because James Degale's here now. He could have come here and got a gold medal and been world and Olympic champion. If the Olympic Games can't motivate you to lose that last pound, you're in trouble, and Frankie knows that. I'm pretty close with Frankie and I know he was watching at home. I bet he wishes he'd made the weight now."

CAZARES OVERWEIGHT FOR CALDERON FIGHT!!!

Sat 23rd August 2008

Hugo Cazares (26-4-1, 19 KOs) came in five pounds overweight in the pre fight weigh yesterday. The former champion is gearing up to fight Ivan Calderon this next Saturday. "We traveled 30 hours without training on the way to Puerto Rico, a travel for more than 20 hours,” was the excuse given by Cazares’ trainer, Manuel Montiel. “Hugo will be at weight the day of the weigh-in.” Cazares echoed his trainer’s promise: "I'm confident I will make the weight and win the fight. There will be no problem to make the weight.”

CASAMAYOR V MARQUEZ CAMP NOTES:

Fri 22nd August 2008

ROGER BLOODWORTH (Head Trainer and Camp Chef - Joel Casamayor)

"This camp has been a little bit different for Joel.  He is a little more intense and focused than past camps.  He's been a pro for a long time, so he trains the same way every time, but this camp he is more dedicated, more intense and training really hard for Marquez. Joel has fought guys that were as good and well-proven as Marquez in the past.  Marquez is a great fighter, but so is Joel.  He is preparing like he normally does against a great fighter.  He doesn't get nervous or over excited or anxious, it's just a fight for him.  This is his job and he is doing what he has to do to be prepared for September 13th. The trick is to eat, but not over eat, so you have to control portions.  Joel eats very well, three maybe four times a day (and if I'm not looking maybe five the trainer said with a wink).  I don't believe in starving fighters.  I started cooking at training camp because it was cheaper for me to cook than to hire a chef.  I don't cook really fancy…I just cook simple meals that are healthy.  Joel really likes chicken, salmon, steamed vegetables and once in a while I make pasta, but I only use whole wheat or brown rice pasta.  We don't eat any junk food, just a clean diet because he has to burn more calories than he takes in."

"We've been watching films and Marquez is an excellent fighter.  I think its going to be a great fight.  Joel's weight is good, training is good, but we don't want to be on weight too soon, because I like to have my fighters be able to eat right up until the time of the weigh in and bring them down slowly."

IGNACIO "NACHO" BERISTAIN (Head Trainer - Juan Manuel Marquez)

"We have been working really hard in the gym.  Juan has been lifting more weights to focus on gaining strength and muscle.  We have changed his diet as well.  He has been eating more carbohydrates to gain the extra weight.  Moving up in weight is a very difficult process for Juan because he is a natural 126 pound fighter and normally fights at 130 pounds, so he is going up even more.  The weight is definitely an advantage for Casamayor because after the weigh-in, Juan will not gain that much weight.  He will probably fight around 142 pounds at the most and Casamayor will definitely go up more than that."

"We have a different relationship than I have with my other fighters…it is more than just fighter and trainer.  He is more than just my fighter; Juan is one of my best friends.  My job is to prevent mistakes for Juan, so I am being very careful with his diet and his training to make sure he is 100 percent ready so that nothing will go wrong on September 13th."

CALZAGHE "I WOULD HAVE BEATEN THEM ALL"

Thurs 21st August 2008

Super Middleweight King Joe Calzaghe was yesterday asked how he would fair against he best the UK had to offer in a prime Chris Eubanks, Nigel Benn, Steve Collins and Herrol Graham.

"I honestly think I faced a lot more dangerous Chris Eubank, than the Eubank who fought Dan Sherry or [Ray] Close, Calzaghe told setantasports.com. Why? Because Eubank wasn't motivated. Eubank was dangerous when he fought Watson and dangerous when he fought Benn. When he was the underdog when his back was against the wall he was a different animal. When I fought him that time, people talk about him having problems making super middleweight but I've lost 14 pounds in a week to make the weight. We've all done that. He was a dangerous fighter, he gave me one hell of a fight, but people didn't give me the credit, they gave him the credit for coming back.

"That was my first 12 round fight. I'd done eight rounds twice and knocked everyone else out inside three, so on that aspect I don't think much would have been different if I'd fought Eubank [at his peak]. Don't forget I'm a lot better fighter now when I fought Eubank."

As for Benn and Collins, the Pride of Wales believes neither would have been able to deal with the speed coming at them from a southpaw stance. If I fought Benn, obviously he was a dangerous puncher but I think he'd have had a nightmare with my style," Calzaghe said. "The same with Collins. It would have been a difficult fight, but I'd have beat him. I'd have beat them all. Herol Graham was awkward, Calzaghe admitted. He'd probably have been the most awkward of all of them.

"At the end of the day, when push came to shove he lost and that's the difference between a great champion, to have your back against the wall and find a way to win. Maybe I'd have had a difficult time but I would have found a way to win."

CAMPBELL V GUZMAN HEATS UP!!!

Thurs 21st August 2008

NATE CAMPBELL:

”Guzman doesn’t know what is going to happen to him,” says Campbell. “He has no idea where I'm taking him on Sept. 13th. I love it when they feed me these guys with these big fat shiny "0's" in their records. Everyone thinks they are gods because they are undefeated. All being undefeated means is that you haven't fought anybody yet, or you’ve never had to deal with any adversity in or out of the ring ... I'm collecting all these ‘0's’, and changing them to ‘Nate's.’ Kid Diamond is 26 and Nate. Juan Diaz is 33 and Nate. And on Sept 13, Joan Guzman will be 28 and Nate. I fought too long and too hard to let anyone take these titles from me, especially Guzman. He just doesn’t know what he is in for."

JOAN GUZMAN:

“Campbell loves to talk. He likes to run his mouth about anything. He can say whatever he wants because it doesn’t change the fact that I will make him look foolish on Sept. 13 … Watching film and actually fighting me are two completely different things. If you thought I was fast and skilled on tape, wait until you try to hit me inside the ring. I’m a blur. It won’t happen.”

Making his first title defense, Campbell will risk his three world titles against Guzman Saturday, Sept. 13, live on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING at 9 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast). The fight will be co-promoted by Don King Productions and One Punch Productions, in association with Sycuan Ringside Promotions.

CALZAGHE V JONES TICKETS GOING FAST!!!

Wed 20th August 2008

According to John Wirt, CEO of Square Ring."Tickets are selling like hot cakes and I would advise all the Calzaghe and Jones fans out there to buy soon if they don't want to pay a ticket broker a huge premium down the road".

Ringside seats at the box office are at $1,500, but are likely to increase tenfold as the celebrity fans join the entourages of two of the world's most celebrated fighters.

ROACH: PACQUIAO TOO MUCH FOR DE LA HOYA!!!

Tues 19th August 2008

Despite reports and confirmations that Manny Pacquiao has called off the proposed December clash against Oscar de la Hoya, the Filipino ring icon's coach and trainer has insisted that his ward "is too much" for the Golden Boy at this time.

"Pacquiao’s style and the in-and-out motion and his speed is, I think, too much for Oscar at this time," Roach told 15rounds.com's Mario Ortega Jr.

Roach said that the de la Hoya now is not the boxer he trained before. "He is not what he once was. He has trouble pulling the trigger.
He (de la Hoya) does have trouble with southpaws, which has nothing really to do with when I was training him."

With regard to de la Hoya's advantage in height and weight, Roach said he does not see this as a problem.

"On fight night, Oscar would outweigh Manny by about ten pounds. That doesn’t bother me whatsoever. Oscar has one advantage, his size, but Manny has speed, power, endurance and youth," he said.

KHAN LOOKING FOR HATTON MATCHUP!!!

Mon 18th August 2008

Amir Khan has reiterated his desire to take on Ricky Hatton in an all-British super-fight.

The 21-year-old is currently preparing for next month's lightweight bout with Colombian Breidis Prescott in Manchester.

But he has already set his sights on a step up to light welterweight next year - which would bring with it the possibility of a fight with the 'Hitman'.

When asked whether he would like to take on Hatton, Khan told Sky Sports News: "Definitely. In 12 months' time I want to move up a weight, and that's definitely a fight of the future the British public want to see.

"I'd love the fight myself. Ricky's a great champion, he's done it the hard way and it would be great to share the same ring as him and put a great fight on for the British fans."

CALZAGHE GUTTED NOT TO FINISH IN CARDIFF!!!

Sun 17th August 2008

Joe Calzaghe yesterday admitted that he is gutted no to finish his career in Cardiff.

In recent years Calzaghe has often said he wanted to end his career with a big-money fight at the Millennium Stadium. But, after promising to retire following his bout with Jones, New York’s Madison Square Garden will now host what appears to be the final chapter in his illustrious career.

“It’s a big shame I couldn’t fight in Cardiff and, to be honest, my first choice would have been to fight at the Millennium Stadium,” he admitted.

“I’ve got so many good memories of fighting in Cardiff and some of the best nights of my career were at the CIA. But the powers-that-be want me to fight in America. HBO weren’t happy about running a pay-per-view show from outside the States and you have to go with what they say. My second choice was Madison Square Garden. But I probably would have made more money in Las Vegas. At least for the fans, it’s a lot easier, cheaper and quicker to get to New York. So hopefully they will see it as a good compromise. I wish I could have fought at the Millennium Stadium for them but that’s just the way it is. I’m just hoping they will come out like they did in Vegas. I’m confident the fans will come to Madison Square Garden. New York is a lot closer than Vegas and I’m sure there is plenty of Christmas shopping to be done after I kick Roy Jones’ butt!”

RONNY VARGAS DIES FROM SHOOTING IN NY!!!

Sun 17th August 2008

It is thought the fighter was sitting in his car in the Bronx when the tragedy occured after a late night argument at a local deli. Vargas later passed away at St. Barnabas Hospital. Sat 16th August 2008

Ishmail "The Arsenal" Arvin (15-1-4, 7 KOs) won a controversial six round TKO over Anthony "The Messenger" Thompson (23-3, 17 KOs) on Friday night at the Ibiza Nightclub in Washington, DC.

Thompson suffered a bad gash over his left eye in the third round from an unintentional head clash, but dropped Arvin twice in the same round. Thompson continued to dominate, but the bout was eventually stopped by referee Malik Waleed after round six due to Thompson's cut. There was confusion after the bout, however, and instead of going to the cards for a technical decision as expected, It was ruled Thompson could not continue and that local hero Arvin was winner by TKO

KHAN TAKES ON COLOMBIAN KO KING!!!

Fri 15th August 2008

British boxing superstar Amir Khan faces the fight of his life against Colombian powerhouse Breidis Prescott on September 6 at the M.E.N Arena in Manchester.

The 25-year-old Colombian boasts a fearsome unbeaten record of 19 fights with 17 big knockout wins - a staggering 14 coming inside three rounds.

At nearly 6' Prescott, ranked #14 by the WBA, has boxed as high as light-welterweight before, will have a slight height advantage over Khan.

And Khan is looking to put on an a great performance for his glittering debut on Sky Box Office, after promoter Frank Warren signed a new 20-fight deal with Britain's premier sports broadcaster.

"Prescott looks dangerous but he's just the kind of opponent I need at this stage of my career to get my fear instinct to kick in," said Khan.

"He may have been knocking them out left right and centre, but I'm going to make him wake up and smell the coffee!

"I've been working on my defensive skills with new coach Jorge Rubio, and it looks like Prescott will be testing out what I've been learning in the gym.

"Along with my strength and conditioning coach, I'm also punching harder than ever before, and I think my offensive skills are going to win my this fight.

"I love to entertain the crowd and the viewers on Sky Box Office, and I plan to go to war against Prescott. I won't be hiding from him - I'll go after him and try and knock him out like I do with all my opponents."

CALZAGHE LOOKING TO RETIRE AFTER JONES!!!

Fri 15th August 2008

In an interview with Setanta Sports News Joe Calzaghe said "At the moment I'm definitely going to retire, As long as I win and I win in style then it'll be my last fight. I've achieved everything I can in boxing. I'm 36 years old and I don't want to keep on fighting. I love boxing and I love what the sport has given me, but I want to retire undefeated."

ROACH SO CONFIDENT THAT PACQUIAO BEATS DE LA HOYA!!!

Fri 15th August 2008

Roach was the main guest of Friday morning’s “Sports Chat”, the daily Philippine radio show aired over DZSR Sports Radio 918khz. The legendary trainer revealed he talked with Bob Arum and Pacquiao’s Canadian adviser Michael Koncz moments before the radio guesting and that both are convinced a deal can still be reached and bring to fruition the intriguing De La Hoya-Pacquiao confrontation.

"You know what, I talked to Michael Koncz and I told him, you know what if Manny doesn’t win this fight you can keep my money. You don’t have to pay me. That’s how sure I am,” said Roach. “The thing is some people tell me that I’m crazy, some people tell me that Manny’s too small, I don’t believe that. I honestly feel Manny can beat this guy.”

I know we have to fight a very good fight and we need to have a great training camp and great sparring partners. The whole thing is preparation. And that’s what Manny does best,” said Roach.

“70-30 split is not a bad deal. It doesn’t sound great for some people but it’s a better deal than Mayweather had and Mayweather made $22-million so you can‘t say it‘s a bad split,” said Roach.

De La Hoya is firm with the 70-30 revenue sharing and won't budge in to the 60-40 split we have counter-offered.”

“It would have been an honor to fight (Oscar De La Hoya) on his last fight capping a very illustrious boxing career but under the circumstances, the option left is to move on.” said Pacquiao in the statement “I have already made specific instructions to my lawyer to start negotiating with Bob Arum for my next fight with any possible opponent at 135 lbs.”

Thurs 14th August 2008

Manny Pacquiao, the Filipino superstar who now holds the WBC world lightweight title, has rejected the offer of a multimillion-dollar contract to fight Oscar De La Hoya on December 6 in Las Vegas in what will be the final fight of the American's career. According to Pacquiao he had been offered only 30% of the purse after asking for a 40-60 split. "It would have been an honour to fight De La Hoya," said Pacquiao, before adding: "I find the offer unacceptable and the only option is to move on." He is now likely to defend his world title, amid speculation that De La Hoya will now look for a contest against the Mexican WBA welterweight champion, Antonio Margarito.

KHAN BACKING MURRAY AT THE OLYMPICS!!!

Tues 12th August 2008

British Olympian Joe Murray makes his attempt at a medal today and there is one man who is particularly keen for bantamweight hopeful to do well in Beijing. That man is the Goldenboy of British boxing Amir Khan.

"Joe and I go back a long way," Khan, who win Silver in Athens four years ago, is quoted as saying by The Daily Telegraph.

"We went to the Junior Olympics together, fought at the same European tournaments and often ended up as room-mates so I know the lad very well.

"Out of all our lads out there Joe's the one who deserves the most success because he's always worked so hard.

”He has done it the hard way, never had any favours and he's not been spoon-fed. Joe's only 21, the same age as me, but he's been training all his life.

"What I like about him is his hunger and determination. I remember him telling me he was aiming for the 2008 Olympics and this was way back in 2001 or 2002. He was a good fighter then, but now he's turned into a man,” the Bolton native added.

Fri 8th August 2008

The fight between Ricardo Mayorga and Shane Mosely is set for September 27th and will take place at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California but fight fans were given a taster of the fireworks that may be on show that night when the two fighter's attended a press conference at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles on Thusday.

The Brash and outspoken Ricardo Mayorga kicked off proceedings when he handed Mosely a pair of pink boxing gloves and told the reporters in attendance "I brought a gift for Shane today, a pair of Pink boxing gloves to match his Pink trunks he will be wearing on September 27, better yet he could be my little green-eye girlfriend,"

"I am not afraid of Mosley, I will show him I am the real man, I will stick my chin in the air for him to hit me just like I have done in the past to prove I'm the man."

Mayorga then lit a cigerette while stood at the podium and said "I took this fight because its an easy fight, I told Don King to get me an easy so I asked for Shane....I made it clear by beating Fernando Vargas at 170 pounds that I am not afraid of anyone. I'm so confident I will win against this pretty girl with green eyes that I want a rematch with Oscar De La Hoya in December. It's going to take me three rounds to beat Mosley and I will be ready for Oscar in December."

"Fernando Vargas and all of his boxing fans told me I couldn't back up my words in November but I did," Mayorga stated in reference to his domination of former two-time world champion "Ferocious" Fernando Vargas at the Staple Center on Nov. 23rd. "I will do to Mosley exactly what I did to Vargas or even worse. Mosley needs to prove to me he can stand up and fight the way Vargas tried to do, Mosley will come to the ring wearing his little pink trunks and his matching boxing gloves skating down the ring. Tn my country the men are in charge."

Mosely then never really raising to the bait told reporters "It's been eight years since I fought at home and I can't wait to fight at the Home Depot Center," Mosley said. "Mayorga is a big talker and I know things are going to heat up between us, but I've been down this road before. All the talking in the world isn't going to help him when we step into the ring, that's where Mayorga will have to eat his words."

US OLYMPIAN RUSSELL OUT OF THE GAMES AFTER COLLAPSE!!!

Fri 8th August 2008

Bantamweight Gary Russell Jr. will miss the Olympics after collapsing while trying to make weight, leaving the American boxing team without one of its top medal hopes.

U.S. coach Dan Campbell said Russell, a two-time national champion, was found unconscious and severely dehydrated early Friday morning by his roommate, light flyweight Luis Yanez.

Medical personnel at the athletes' village rehydrated Russell, but he wasn't healthy enough to participate in Friday's weigh-in. Russell was resting Friday after failing in a dangerous final effort to reach the 119-pound limit.

"We became alarmed a couple of days ago when we saw he wasn't sweating like he should," Campbell said after Friday's draw. "When these kids try to make weight, sometimes they cut corners. What we believe is he did not increase his fluid intake after we told him to."

"We thought he was a very good shot at a medal," Campbell said. "We try to tell the team when we have these types of adversities, we still have eight guys in there, and we're going to try to concentrate on what we've got."

"I've just always thought winning a gold medal would mean more than being a world champion, or winning all that money, or anything," Russell told The Associated Press last month. "There's just something about it."

RUBIO'S PROMISE TO KHAN!!!

Wed 6th August 2008

PRESS RELEASE

Jorge Rubio , the new trainer for undefeated Amir Khan, has promised to help deliver a world title to the 21-year-old hot-shot.

Rubio, the Florida-based Cuban, met the media yesterday at a workout with Khan in Khan’s Boxing Gym in Bolton, England. He stated that Khan was among the most talented fighters he has worked with, which is saying a lot considering Rubio coached the Cuban national amateur squad and is currently training unbeaten featherweight prospect and 2004 Olympic Champion Yuriorkis Gamboa. If all goes to plan, Rubio is confident that he will help guide Khan to a world title within the next 12 months.

Promoter Frank Warren is confident that his protege -- who is world-rated No. 2 by the World Boxing Organization and No. 4 by the World Boxing Council -- will make it to the top too.

"It’s my ambition to make Amir a world champion," said Rubio. "I believe he has got the talent to reign for years. I have been working on his defence and his footwork, but I’m not looking at changing him too much, just improving on certain areas. It will take time, but Amir has already got better in the few weeks I’ve worked with him, and I’m seeing the difference every day. Amir Khan is a smart guy and I only have to tell him something once before he puts into practice. He has all the tools to become a world champion."

Rubio’s innovative training techniques were on display during yesterday’s intense workout as Khan worked on his footwork and head movement in a ring traversed by ropes.

"Jorge is a great trainer," said undefeated Commonwealth champion Khan (18-0, 14 KOs). "I knew as soon as I met him that he was the man for me. I’d met Buddy McGirt, Freddie Roach and really liked Floyd Mayweather Snr, but when I hooked up with Jorge I loved his style and his teaching methods. I think I’ve been hit more by him that I have been by my opponents, because if I leave my hands low, even by a fraction of an inch, he whacks me one with the pads! He’s got me moving my head a lot more and slipping shots, and I think I’ve come on a lot just in two weeks. He can definitely take me to the next level which is a world title."

PAVLIK V HOPKINS PRESSER!!!

Wed 6th August 2008

A news conference for the October 18 light heavyweight bout between Kelly Pavlik and Bernard Hopkin was held today at Chickie and Pete’s sports bar in south Philadelphia.

Todd DuBoef, President of Top Rank Inc

"We are proud to bring to you a great fight featuring two great fighters, the young lion, undefeated middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik from Youngstown, Ohio, and a legend, your legend from Philadelphia, Bernard Hopkins.”

Mark Taffet, of HBO

“Kelly Pavlik is building the young fan base that the sport needs. Kelly always wants the biggest challenge out there, and he is taking on a legend. That is a heck of a test. I’d like to thank Kelly Pavlik. He didn’t have to take this fight, but he did.

“On the other side of the dais is a first ballot hall-of-famer, Bernard Hopkins. Like Kelly, Bernard always wants the biggest challenge. He is taking on an undefeated KO artist in Kelly Pavlik. This will be a great fight. Will Bernard Hopkins be the fighter to derail the man who is Kelly Pavlik?”

Hopkins’ longtime trainer, Nazim Richardson

I appreciate Kelly Pavlik’s stride, and how he has come along as a fighter. People think he is new to Philly, but I know he’s been here in Philadelphia as an amateur. Bernard was getting ready for Simon Brown. He is no surprise to us, and we know we have to work hard. People overlook his skills because of his power. We have our work cut out for us.”

Bernard Hopkins

“As I look at the TV, I see an old dog named Brett Favre, who, like me, still got swagger at 40. I am not the only one still standing. Don’t look for me to retire. I have a long distance deal with Brett Favre. I’ll retire when Brett Favre retires,” he joked. “Now let’s talk about boxing.”

“I this fight, we have two blue collar guys, two construction workers fighting for a sandwich after 9 hours of work. I respect what this guy [Pavlik] has done. He is my successor, and he got it [the middleweight title] the old fashioned way like I did. But I have to do my job. I am not afraid of a ghost,”

“This is a hurt business, and I’ve been successful at it for 20 years. I have confidence from my last fight. But I lost, you say. People just said I lost. I am coming in with a controlled anger and confidence. Yesterday is in the past. I am not showing my age. I am a seasoned veteran who has fought every style, and has a plan to take the other guy’s best weapon and use it against him.”

Hopkins then referred to his 2001 stoppage of then-undefeated Felix Trinidad as an example. “Everyone said I was in with a killer. They were saying “left hook, left hook, left hook”, but I showed him my right hand.”

He continued, “Pavlik is known for having a great right hand, but I have one of the best defenses in the sport. The name of the game is to take what he does best and use it against him. That’s what I do best.”

Bernard then made a brief hint at retirement. “Atlantic City has been good to me. If this is my last visit, on my terms – not Kelly Pavlik’s terms, I want to put on a great fight. I am looking for Kelly Pavlik to bring his A-game. I want to fight him at his best. At the end of the day, whoever has the best game plan will win the fight."

Kelly Pavlik trainer Jack Loew

“Bernard Hopkins didn’t have to take this fight, but he did. I expect him to be fully prepared. Bernard proved himself with slappy Joe [Calzaghe]. I thought he won. He has a win over Winky Wright, and has had two close fights with Jermain Taylor. We know he will be fully prepared.

Kelly Pavlik

“People asked me why I took this fight, and why fight at 170. I wanted to fight the best. I wanted to fight Calzaghe, supposedly the best fighter pound-for-pound, but there is no way we could get him. Then someone mentioned Bernard Hopkins. We train the same way for every fight. I need to be at my best, and I expect a tough fight. It is a pleasure to be in the ring with Bernard Hopkins,” he said.

“He came up the same way as me. We both fought our way up. I knocked out tough Jose Luis Zertuche and Edison Miranda. I took chances and beat Miranda. I fought Jermain Taylor with no tune-up fight, and then I fought him a second time. It was a hard road.”

Answering the question why he elected to take this fight at 170 pounds, Pavlik said, “There was no one else to fight. Calzaghe won’t fight. That [Hopkins] was the only fight I had. He couldn’t weight 160, so we’re fighting at 170. I’m 6’2” and I walk around at 176. I have to lose weight to make this weight. My punches have more snap on them at this weight, and I’m not drained.”

“A win is a win,” stated Pavlik, when asked about pressure to look good. “A win over Bernard Hopkins is great. There is no pressure on me no matter how it turns out. Boxing was down a little, and this fight is a great fight for boxing, like Margarito-Cotto was. This is what boxing needs.”

z GORRES ACCEPTS FIGHT WITH ARCE!!!

Tues 5th August 2008

Z "The Dream" Gorres has accepted a offer from the IBF for the title eliminator against Jorge Arce of Mexico.

The news was revealed by Eric Gomez,
who is the matchmaker and vice-president of Golden Boy Promotions.

According to Gomez, Gorres "would love to fight Arce."

But despite Gorres' positive response, IBF Championship Committee chief Lindsey Tucker conceded that he does not think Arce would accept the challenge. He said that if Arce declines, he will make the offer to the next available challenger.

Meanwhile
Tony Aldeguer of Cebu's ALA Gym said he would love to have a Gorres-Arce clash because he is confident the Filipino southpaw could beat the Mexican.

Aldeguer had been upset over the IBF's insistence that Gorres fight another eliminator even as he already fought Darchinyan a similar event in February. The fight resulted in a draw.

The gym owner said he was made to understand that since the IBF gave Darchinyan the mandatory title shot against Dimitri Kirilov, Gorres would be next in line for a title fight versus the winner.
