IVAN CALDERON Ivan in my opinion is one of the best boxers not only in his weight class but in boxing as a whole. Raised in the fighting country of Puerto Rico Ivan was blessed with a god given gift which was passed down from his countrymen like Wilfredo Gomez, Wilfred Banitez and Juan Laporte. Calderon is a pure tactician who can adapt to any style and plays out fights like a chess match. He is blessed with quick hands and even quicker feet which are easily comparable to the likes of Floyd Mayweather and Joan Guzman. He is a slick fighter who fights out of a southpaw stance and his jabs flow with water, There is one glaring weak point in the fighters armour and thats the power issue, Throughout his 31 fights only six men have been stopped which gives us the opinion that his punches lack any power to concern Cazares then again when you are as good as Calderon this probably doesnt concern him one bit., RATINGS out of 10
HUGO CAZARES Hugo Cazares is one of those fighters that alot of casual fight fan's knows nothing about. This isnt because he isnt any good quite the opposite, It is because the lighter weight divisions in recent times have been overlooked for the more lucrative Middleweight to Heavy divisions. This is a shame considering in the last few years the lighter divisions have been throwing up the better fights in boxing.. Cazares is just one of the exciting fighters that applies his trade in the lower weights. He is a Mexican fighter in every sense of the word. I dont really like to put fighters into categories, such as saying Mexican fighters are the same, European Fighters are the same etc etc but what I do mean is Cazares will fight untill there is no fight left and is always professional with his approach, He has some decent power and likes to throw a lot of power punches. FIRST FIGHT BETWEEN THE TWO FIGHTERS On August 25, 2007 Calderón defeated Hugo Cázares by split decision to become the World Boxing Organization's Light Flyweight Champion. Calderón entered the ring accompanied by a display of fireworks, before a crowd that included several media personalities including Oscar de la Hoya. The size difference between both pugilists was evident since the moment that they stood next to each other prior to the beginning of the fight. Early in the fight Calderón's tactic consisted of connecting fast consecutive combinations while avoiding Cázares' punches. With this strategy he managed to stun Cazares with uppercuts and straight punches. During the fight the crowd displayed support for Calderón, at one point chanting "Olé" when his adversary's punches missed. In the third round Cazares displayed a more fluid offensive, but in the fifth he presented a strategy that consisted of only throwing power punches which seemed to benefit Calderón. In the seventh round Ivan's offensive pace slowed which benefited Hugo who improved on the offensive aspect. In the eighth round Cázares connected several hard punches which led to Calderón to rely on holds to slow his offense, in this round Cázares scored a knockdown. In the ninth he was in a defensive stance, and during the last rounds he continued this pattern and only connected solidly in the tenth round while Cázares missed several of the punches he threw. At the conclusion of the fight the judges awarded scores of 116-111 for Cázares and 115-112 twice for Calderón. With this victory Iván became the eleventh Puerto Rican boxer to win multiple world championships and unified this championship with the minimum divion's one until he vacated it following the announcement that he was going to continue in the light flyweight division. PREDICTION I think in this fight Ivan Calderon will be more cautious when exchanging with Cazares due to the fact that Calderon hit in the canvas in their last fight so look for Iron Boy to jab and keep a safe distance like he did in the first eight rounds when the two met in August 2007. If and this is a big If, Cazares can set traps for the champion then he may be able to unload but I cant see that happening.and I see Slick Calderon to move in and out using his combinations to keep Cazares on the back foot while sailing to a unanimous decision.
