Andre Ward often thought he was overlooked by his country after capturing gold at the Athens Olympics in 2004, seeing the past fighters like Sugar Ray Leonard and Oscar De La Hoya arriving home to a fanfare and being instantly recognisable, Andre on the other hand went kind of under the radar which has never sat right with him. This has acted like a blessing in disguise because instead of sulking about it he chose to prove his doubters wrong and show the world what Andre Ward really had to offer. The stage was set in 2009 with the introduction of the Super Six competition that put the divisions six best fighters together in the hope of crowning one true king and after wins over Mikkel Kessler, Allan Green, Arthur Abraham and Carl Froch everyone was left in agreement that Andre was that man and an easy decision for fighter of the year.
I have to admit that when Ricky captured the title in 2010 I was a little sceptical as to whether he could keep hold of it especially after his promotional team secured a fight with former world champion Michael Katsidis in 2011. Unlike me they had faith in the Scottish fighter and with good reason because on the 5th November not only did Burns beat Katsidis he actually gave him a boxing lesson in the process. This one may have been my toughest pick because the usual front runners have fallen by the wayside, Amir Khan's loss to Lamont Peterson, Wladimir Klitschko only fighting once in 2011 and I didn't want to go with the easy pick of Vitali.........All in All I believe Ricky deserves his place as European fighter of the year.
Beating two big names throughout 2011 gave me an easy decision for this section as the young Philadelphian made it through both Kendall Holt and Nate Campbell. A bout for a world title awaits in 2012 against the Mexican legend Erik Morales which is sure to keep fight fans on their feet for the duration.
A lot of other websites have opted for Victor Ortiz' win over Andre Berto to be their fight of the year and that is a very good shout but to be a little different I instead opted for Hernan Tyson Marquez' win over Luis Concepcion which I like many thought was an absolute classic in every sense of the word. The fight is often overlooked by the casual fight fan because of the fact it wasnt shown on any major tv network but if you missed it the first time around I suggest you look it up because youve missed a great battle between two of the lighter divisions best.
This was a tight decision but I choose Adrian Broner's knockout over Jason Litzau because of the way he landed his beautiful combination that left Jason thinking he may have been hit by a mack truck. Ola Afolabi's one punch knockout over Terry Dunstan ran it close but for me the Cinncinatti fighter deserved the nod because of the way he set up the knockout.
Juan Manuel Lopez was boxing's golden boy at the time of the upset with his promotional company Top Rank looking at Orlando Salido as a tough Mexican whose come forward style could possibly showcase Juanma's skills to the fullest, well thats what they thought would happen. Orlando Salido had different ideas and his come forward style and rugged personality gave the Puerto Rican fits as The Mexican stopped the superstar over eight rounds.
Robert Garcia as had a solid 2011 with his star pupil's Nonito Donaire and Brandon Rios continuing their terrific form. Robert was my runner up last year behind Freddie Roach but is closing the gap on becoming one of the best trainers within the sport. |
